The City of Tshwane is deeply concerned about disturbing allegations that some municipal refuse collectors and contractors demand “Xmas” a euphemism that implies money or gifts for the Christmas holidays from ratepayers.
The city wishes to state unequivocally that residents are under no obligation to offer refuse collection personnel any gifts.
“ Residents are therefore urged to report imposters, municipal refuse collectors, and contractors who approach or harass them for gifts or donations, as this violates city policies,” the City said.
The collection of waste from the doorstep of residents and businesses until the disposal thereof is the responsibility of the municipality.
Customers cannot therefore be charged twice for the management of waste, as this already forms part of their monthly utility bill.
Residents are encouraged to take a picture of the implicated person soliciting a ‘bribe’, jot down the registration number of the vehicle used and report the incident to wastemanagement@tshwane.gov.za
It is important for the Tshwane residents to be cautious of this trend of asking for donations over the festive season as it also poses a danger for criminals pretending to be municipal employees or personnel contracted to the city. No staff of the contractor or employee of the city should demand a gift or be given money for refuse collection.
