Tshwane’s Department of Community and Social Development conducted a visit to Soshanguve, as well as various shopping centres in the area, including Batho Plaza.
The purpose of this initiative was to raise awareness regarding Gender-Based Violence against women and children within communities.
The campaign marked a significant milestone for the 16 Days of Activism campaign, aimed at combating violence against women and children.
Its success lies in its ability to raise public awareness regarding Gender-Based Violence and inspire individuals to actively engage in efforts to eliminate it.
The campaign, as articulated by MMC for Community and Social Development, Cllr. Peggy de Bruin, aimed to foster awareness and convey the message that it is imperative for communities to unite in the fight against gender-based violence targeting women and children.
The MMC also reiterated the ongoing programmes through which they actively engage with communities.
“A few months ago, we went to Klipgat, where we were once again addressing the issue,” said the MMC de Bruin.

“During the 16 Days campaign, various programs and activities have been meticulously planned to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV).”
“The overarching aim is to diminish instances of GBV while underlining the critical importance of addressing this issue,” added MMC de Bruin.
“We know that GBV happens every day, women and children get bitten up and killed daily. It’s something that we have to fight, the 16 Day is to just raise more awareness on the issue,” added the MMC.

She also believes that there are people who don’t even know that violence is wrong, “We are busy educating them in these campaigns so that men know that women have to be protected,” she continued.
During their campaigns, they speak to parents as well to teach their children that violence is not an answer.
Community and Social Development wants the communities to be responsible and fight the GBV issue so that things don’t get worse.
“It should be also preached in churches, where we say violence is not good. We want churches to come on board to help us, all stakeholders in the community.
“Man, women are precious, women have to be protected, women know your worth, do not stay in an abusive relationship. Even man, once you see the signs, walk away,” concluded the MMC de Bruin.
