The Department of Environmental and Agriculture Management hosted a clean-up campaign in Mabopane Ward 20 to provide education and awareness campaigns on litter prevention.
The campaign aimed to provide environmental education for the community and educate them about illegal dumping. It also educated them about how illegal dumping affects their health and well-being.
Spokesperson of the waste management department Alice Mphahlele said, “We are all responsible for waste generation and we must therefore come together as the municipality and the community to fight illegal dumping”.
She continued to say that leaving the whole responsibility to the municipality is not helping solve the problem of illegal dumping. However, the solution to the problem is coming is to work together as a community and protect the environment.
The waste cleaning department launched a campaign in November 2022 named RE KAOFELA to encourage community members to adopt illegal dumping hotspots to put an end to the dumping crisis.
As a result of the involvement of community members and the Ward Councillor, Alice described the campaign as a success.
