Littering is defined as improper waste disposal. The littering within our shopping centres and the whole environment is a threat. By littering our malls, decreasing our property values, and destroying our natural beauty, it destroys the beauty of our townships.
However, information on potential environmental conditions related to health hazards in shopping malls is scarce in developing townships.
There are many ways in which illegally dumped items can stifle the growth of our local communities. In the case of a business, park, or school, hiring people to pick up litter can be an extremely expensive undertaking. The company may require their employees to pick up litter from the parking lot, entrances, and landscaped areas around the building. There are many ways that waste can be cleaned up by volunteers.
Mabopane Station’s taxi ranks and Central City Shopping Centre suffer from littering and undisciplined dumping, and the area stinks horribly. Additionally, roadside vendors sell pre-cooked food. A great deal of small wildlife crawls inside bottles or flies around inside.
The Tshwane Bulletin Live spoke to the taxi operators and the hawkers about the undisciplined dumping. According to them, they have addressed the issue with commuters and the City of Tshwane.
“People are unwilling to change when we advise them about dumping. Some even rant at us when we confront the matter,” said one of the taxi operators.
“Educating people about the need to dispose of waste properly. And presentations about the harmful impacts of litter will decrease some littering behaviour”
“However, as with any public education campaign, the message of learning must be consistent. Only one educational effort will not result in permanent behavioural changes. As a society, we must become weary of littering behaviour,” he added.
Engage businesses that produce or sell items that are frequently littered.
Consumer product manufacturers, fast-food restaurants, tobacco manufacturers, convenience stores, and other similar companies could put more effort into educating their customers, supporting local clean-up events, and educating the public.
