Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) K9 Unit were conducting routine patrols in the Silverton area when they arrested four men travelling in a white Ford Ranger double-cab bakkie along Petroleum Road in Waltloo.
Acting on instinct, the officers conducted a vehicle check via radio communication and found that the bakkie had no registered owner. The vehicle was promptly stopped, and the occupants were ordered to exit and lie on the ground.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a Glock pistol with six rounds of ammunition hidden beneath the gear seats. In addition, a black bag containing a large screwdriver, a bolt cutter, and two 20-volt grinding machines was found in the vehicle.
Preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen at Sinoville SAPS.
“All four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of housebreaking implements,” said Captain Johan Van Dyk.
Silverton Station Commander, Colonel Moshata, commended the officers for their vigilance and dedication.
“I’m proud to lead such a dedicated team of officers who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. Your work is not only a reflection of your own character but also a source of inspiration to your colleagues and the community we serve,” said Moshata.

A local community member, Mrs Ntobela, expressed gratitude for the successful patrol.
“I am very happy because, as a community, we can see that the police are working hard to fight crime in our society,” she said.
The investigation remains ongoing to determine whether the suspects can be linked to other criminal activities. The firearm will undergo forensic testing to establish whether it has been used previously.
