The Gauteng Education Department has confirmed that 90 learners from Pulamadibogo Primary School in Soshanguve experienced nausea and stomach cramps following the alleged consumption of space cookies.
Learners were rushed to a local medical facility to receive treatment and for an investigation into what might have caused them to have stomach cramps and to see if this could be the reason.
It was reported to the department that approximately 90 children from Grades R to 7 had consumed what looked like muffins, which were suspected to have dagga (space cookies) hidden inside them. They purchased these muffins from a street vendor on their way to school.
“Educators witnessed strange behaviour from the learners and immediately called emergency services for necessary support” said the department.
“The students affected by this incident were tended to by emergency services on school premises. They were, however, taken to different medical facilities where they will continue to be monitored until their conditions have improved.”

Police visited the school as this incident caused distress among parents, who also came as they were concerned about the safety of their children. Consequently, the street vendor was identified and a police investigation will be conducted in accordance with that identification.
“This is concerning for us and we call for patience from parents while Investigations are underway and learners are recovering.
“We encourage learners to be vigilant of what they purchase and consume.and be cautious of who they purchase food from. We wish all affected learners speedy recovery.” said MEC Chiloane.
