Winterveldt is in the grips of an epidemic of property vandalism. Recently, two schools were broken into and vandalized, Dikago Dintle and Mlokotwa Dube Primary Schools. In both schools, electronic devices used to capture data were stolen.
The Progressive Student Movement calls for police patrols and school watch around Winterveldt. It has been reported that this crime element has existed for much longer than 2016. Soshanguve, Attredgeville, and Mabopane are also victims of vandalism.
“School security needs to be beefed up by the South African Police Service and the safety cluster” said Kabelo Ashly Nthekiso Progressive Student Movement President.

“Schools have only one guard, and they’re being overpowered by the criminals when they break in. They use a baton for protection, whereas criminals come in numbers and sometimes with dangerous weapons.
Nthekiso added that they have been making the call, and the SAPS responded that they do not have enough vehicles to patrol around school properties.
The call has been made again, what is left is for the government to respond. The issue does not affect only school staff; parents, learners, and the community at large are also involved. It also questions the work of Crime Prevention Wardens.
