Gauteng Education is concerned about the sudden suicides of learners from separate schoolsA grade 10 learner from Soshanguve Secure Centre was found hanging in his dormitory during lunch on Monday and in another incident a Grade 9 boy learner from Kgetsi Ya Tsie Secondary School tragically took his own life at home on the same day.
In a recent report, it was reported that a Grade 10 boy from Soshanguve Secure Centre was taken to the juvenile center a week ago, and he was awaiting trial. The department’s Psycho-Socio Support is expected to assist in both instances.
Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane said that “These incidents serve as a grim reminder that the emotional well-being of learners is a shared responsibility that requires immediate attention from all of us”
“As we mourn the loss of young lives, there is a growing determination to prevent future tragedies and foster cultural support, compassion, and understanding within the educational community.
