EFF Tshwane visited Reimolotswe Primary School in Winterveldt after being informed that the school is facing environmental issue and transport challenges.
In the report, the pupils are facing challenges in scholar buses as they are in unsafe conditions. Recently, the school has been plagued by an infestation of mosquitoes, making it difficult for the pupils to attend classes.
Regional chairperson of the EFF Obakeng Ramabodu said that the party is deeply concerned about these issues as they compromise pupils’ safety.
“Learners should be transported to a safe environment and call upon the relevant authorities to take immediate action. Mosquito infestation in and around the school poses a serious health risk to students,” said Ramabodu.
“We have selected a representative of parents together with our MPL (Member of the Provincial Legislature) to attend the Legislature and engage with the MEC of education,” stated Ramabodu.
“On the issue of the road we are preparing to do the Andries Tatane programme where we will try to open the road for them”, added Ramabodu.
According to EFF’s Lindiwe Masilela, the school’s complaints about the unsafe conditions of buses have been reported to the government. Students claim that buses usually get stuck and have broken windows.
The spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona said,” The department is aware and concerned about the situation whereby learners of the said school are unable to travel to school, especially on rainy days.”
“The matter was brought to the attention of the Local Councilor and municipality however much has been done to improve the roads condition but the results have been disappointing”, Mabona added.
The EFF is calling upon all stakeholders to take immediate action to address the challenges. This will improve access to the school and also ensure everyone’s safety.
