In response to the recent cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal, the City of Tshwane has advised the residents not to drink tap water. However, this is not surprising since the area has experienced a water crisis for more than a decade.
Since none of the coalitions have attempted to resolve the water crisis in the area, the Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD) criticised DA and blamed ANC governments.
Mbahare Kekana, the leader of the F4SD, says that people have taps in their homes, but do not have access to water. Furthermore, he stated that the people who are responsible for providing clean water to residents are not interested in doing so since they benefit from not doing so.
The cholera outbreak has caused several deaths and many sick residents. Currently, over 23 deaths have been reported and more than 70 people affected.
Currently, the coalition is useless. We saw them holding press conferences that didn’t help. This situation is now being used by local councillors to position their political parties for the coming elections in 2024. Tshwane is facing the challenge of dealing with the Rooiwal plant, said Kekana.
Hammanskraal needs a functioning water system. In order to prevent a repeat of this outbreak, strong leadership is necessary to spread awareness and ensure proper segmentation, Kekana added.
