Lebohang Development Centre hosted a spelling bee competition at Lebelo Primary School in Hammanskraal. The centre aims to develop learners with leadership skills, personal development and academic programmes from an early age. It targets schools in disadvantaged communities.
- The Development Centre hosts a spelling bee
- Learners and teachers responded very well
- The centre is planning its second spelling bee for the year
- This will take place at a school in Soshanguve
The centre starts preparing for competitions 3 months before competition day. This is done by preparing the learners to know spelling bee procedures and rules and allowing learners sufficient time to participate in their words.
Thando Masanabo an associate and adjudicator of the Lebohang Development Centre since its inception in 2018 said,” The spelling Bee is not about getting top spellers but to introduce an alternative educational initiative in learners, that enables them to be inquisitive, love to read, love to learn and build self-confidence”.
According to Fanisa Makhubela communication officer of the centre the learners and teachers responded very well.
She stated, “We received tremendous support from teachers, parents and the community at large
She continued to say that one heart-warming part during our spelling Bee event at Lebelo Primary was when the “naughty boy” in the class won second place as the outstanding speller surprising his teachers and father and he got to hear his father tell him that he is proud of him.
The centre is planning its second spelling bee for the year. This will take place at a school in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. We will soon meet with the school representative to plan together, said Thando.
Lebohang development centre is actively looking for organizations to partner with them preferably a car brand that will help transport them to different locations, fast food outlets that will provide food during competition days, bookstores to assist with stationery and grocery storage to sponsor them with vouchers for the winners.
