His goal was to raise awareness on socio-economic conditions of the community and unite the society through sports. Soshanguve Block P, Y, SS and DD ward 88 Councillor Tshepang Boikanyo hosted the annual ward 88 Councillor’s Cup.
The tournament took place on the 29th of January 2022 with eight teams (quarter finals) and proceeded to the semi-finals on the 5th of February ending on the 12th of the same month. The opening ceremony was held at Mmushi soccer ground Block P.
Inaugurated late last year, Tshepang Boikanyo was presented with responsibility to lead developmental programs of ward 88. Given a background of society that is characterised by violence and lawlessness, councillor Boikanyo had to come up with creative ways of tackling community issues.
“When it comes to crime , youth remains the most active participants and vulnerable too , this automatically makes them my first target group, ” said Boikanyo.
The project plan was approved early this year by the tournament organising committee and it was inclusive of earmarked potential sponsors.
The following entities were part of the official sponsors and partners, KagoEntle Sechabeng Foundation official partner, Rietgat Police Station, Spar ( Maluleke ),Funky inn restaurant ,Vuma, Batho Plaza, Unjani Clinic, Badimo Business Solutions and Evodrip.
Boikanyo shared his best moment of the tournament and said, “There was a moment when a player from Masokora FC scoring an unbelievable beautiful goal with a header during the semi- finals and that was amazing, that image stuck in my mind for days …I wished I had the match broadcasted live for the whole country to see.”
Emphasizing on the importance of promoting young talent in the community Boikanyo revealed that one of the significant pillars of the campaign was to unearth raw talent from grassroots as the number of professional football players produced in Soshanguve is not satisfactory.
Boikanyo thanked everyone who laid a hand in making ward 88 councillor’s cup 2022 a reality.
“Thank you to everyone who played their part towards the realisation of this prestigious event, councillor’s cup shall continue to organise sports events in remembrance of the fallen victims of crime and drug abuse and thinking about the future of our community members,” said Boikanyo
