The Rietgat SAPS arrested a 26 year-old man in possession of illegal firearms and house breaking implements in Block T, Soshanguve in the early hours of today.
This follows a suspicious looking vehicle that started driving at high speed when the police approached it during patrol. As the police cornered the vehicle, other occupants ran at different directions and the suspect opened fire at the police, but the police returned fire and shot him in the arm and the lower body. No member of the police was injured during the incident.

An illegal firearm was found in the suspect’s possession and upon searching the vehicle another unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as house breaking implements were also found in the vehicle. Both firearms’ serial numbers were filed off.
He was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and attempted murder. He will appear before the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court in due course.
