Thousands of Mabopane and Winterveldt residents find themselves in the dark after a cable theft at Hangklip substation interrupted the power supply. This incident has left more than 24 000 customers without a power supply since Thursday the 29th July 2021.
Technicians have been on-site working diligently on repairs and restoration of supply since the morning of Thursday 29 0f July 2021. Due to the complex nature of the damage caused by the cable, Eskom is unable to determine the period it will take to finalise the repairs and restore power to the affected customers.
Eskom in Gauteng has noticed a concerning increase of theft and vandalism of electricity equipment “We would like to appeal to the public to partner with us in reducing electricity related criminal activities by reporting illegal connections, theft, and vandalism of electricity infrastructure to the Eskom crime line on 0800 112 722.
The battle to stop electricity theft can only be won if community members work together with Eskom and law enforcement agencies,” says Mashangu Xivambu, Senior Manager for Operations and Maintenance in Gauteng.
The power utility has notified the affected customers about the cause of the outage and continues to provide regular updates through various communication channels.
“We urge our customers in the affected areas to be patient as we work on restoring their power supply,” concluded Xivambu.
